Warmia and Masuria is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts and a real Eldorado for sailors. There are nearly 3,000 lakes in the region! They create unique conditions not only for taking a rest and relaxation, but also for communing with nature.
The Great Masurian Lakes Trail (132 km) is unique on a European scale. It goes through over a dozen bodies of water connected by channels. The main part of the trail goes from Węgorzewo to the Nidzkie Lake (Pranie Forester’s Lodge). The largest and the most popular lakes along the trail are: Śniardwy and Mamry Lakes, and its main tourist centres include: Węgorzewo, Giżycko, Ryn, Mikołajki, Ruciane-Nida and Pisz.
Sailing on the Jeziorak Lake complex is also popular with water sports enthusiasts. Through the Elbląg Canal – the longest navigable channel in Poland – it has a connection with the Vistula Lagoon, and from there – through Żuławy Loop – with Vistula River and the Baltic Sea.
The network of modern eco-marinas
Every day about 10 thousand sailing boats sail on the Great Masurian Lakes in the summer season. In order to minimize the impact of tourism on the water environment, the network of eco-marinas has been created. Eco-marinas are ecological ports for yachts.
They offer attractive rest and refreshment facilities for people involved in sailing. They provide utility and living services (toilets, shower cabins, drying rooms) and accommodation-catering services (camping sites, kitchens, taverns). Moreover, they provide minor boat repairs.
The scope of services offered by eco-marinas:
- waste removal – both liquid (chemical WC catchments) and solid waste,
- cleaning services (scullery, laundry),
- water and electric energy extraction,
- medical care, giving first aid,
- providing the services of lifeguards,
- using the ecological information point,
- educational and training classes in the field of ecology.
Eco-marinas have been created in the Land of Great Masurian Lakes (Węgorzewo, Ryn, Mikołajki, Giżycko, Wilkasy, Piaski, Kamień, Pisz) and in the complex of Jeziorak Lake (Iława, Siemiany, Zalewo) and in the Mrągowo Lake District (Mrągowo).
Regardless of this, modern sailing ports have also been created, among others, in Olsztyn and Iława. In addition, the ports and marinas at the Vistula Lagoon (Tolkmicko, Frombork, Nowa Pasłęka) have also been modernized.
