Wild nature has a soothing effect on us. No surprise there are more and more enthusiasts of bushcraft, survival and broadly understood outdoor.
In order to meet their expectations, the State Forests introduced a programme of legal camping in the forest. It is called “Stay overnight in the forest”. From May 1, 2021 in some designated areas, you can sleep in the forest without any problems, provided that you follow the rules set out in the regulations.
Therefore, forest districts in Warmia and Mazury have also designated special areas where you can legally camp in the wild.
In order to find a specific area located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship please do the following:
- enter the website of the Forest Data Bank www.bdl.lasy.gov.pl/portal/mapy;
- in the lower menu, select the “BDL Maps” option;
- then select the “Map of development of tourist facilities” collection;
- in the extensive list that will develop, please choose the option “Stay overnight in the Forest Programme”;
- we choose the area we are interested in and … we go to the forest.

But before we do so, let’s get familiar with some important rules for camping in the forest:
- we camp in a way that will not leave traces of us – we take the rubbish with us, we do not destroy the groundcover, trees, bushes, we do not leave any leftovers;
- we make bonfires only in designated areas; we only use gas stoves in areas where it is permitted (see the MBL map); in other cases, we do not use open fire in the forest;
- we do not have to report camping when we spend the night in a group of up to 9 people and not longer than 2 nights;
- camping with a bigger number of people and for a longer time must be reported – no later than 2 working days before the planned accommodation – send an e-mail to the address of the relevant forest inspectorate; only after receiving the confirmation of notification from the forest district office, we are entitled to camp
- it is best to spend the night using a hammock or a tent flysheet; if we want to put up a tent, we should do it in a place with a hardened surface so as not to damage the groundcover;
- if we go on a trip with a dog, it must be kept on a leash all the time;
- we can collect fruit and mushrooms for our own use, if they do not belong to protected species; however, we cannot obtain wood (e.g. to make a bonfire or build a shelter);
- before we go to the forest, let’s visit the site www.bdl.lasy.gov.pl/portal/ and check the map of forest entry bans (a periodic ban on entry to the forest may be introduced, for example, due to a fire hazard or tree logging).
