Mazury Garbate – among hills and lakes

Mazury Garbate is a land that delights not only with its hilly landscapes and natural wealth, but also with its unique monuments. Nowadays, the areas of the Ełk, Gołdap and Olecko counties located in this region are called the “Land of EGO”. The abbreviation EGO comes from the first letters of their names, and is also associated with the Latin word “I”.

In the Land of EGO, we can discover who we are, get to know our inner selves, find what we need: contact with nature, solace, balance, but also adventure and the opportunity to explore history. The local landscapes are full of rivers, streams and – as befits the Masurian Lake District – lakes. It is one of the coldest areas in Poland, which at the same time boasts particularly high air quality.

Mazury Garbate is a perfect place both for a summer holiday and for a winter getaway. They offer silence among spruce forests and plenty of opportunities to spend time actively.

Near Gołdap, skiers can enjoy cross-country trails in the Kumieta Forest and the slopes of Piękna Góra, from the top of which you can admire the edge of the Romincka Forest and the surrounding lakes. Especially in the vicinity of Ełk, horse riding enthusiasts will find conditions for practicing their favorite form of recreation. The areas near Olecko encourage the use of increasingly popular kayaking trips.

In Mazury Garbate there is no shortage of hiking and cycling trails leading through the most picturesque corners of the land. Particularly worth paying attention to is the Trail of Broken Semaphores, which runs through a former railway line whose history dates back to the early 20th century. Unfortunately, its infrastructure was almost completely destroyed by the Red Army. However, its surviving elements are still very impressive, especially the monumental viaducts in Stańczyki.

Mazury Garbate is an area with a difficult and rich history, the mementos of which we can see today. In the Gołdap district these will include, among others: the water tower in Gołdap, the pyramid in Rapa, and the ruins of the palace in Mieduniszki. While in Ełk, it is worth seeing the beautiful facade of the Art School building and the ruins of the Teutonic castle. A particularly beautiful palace awaits us in Golubie. In the Olecko district, it is worth paying attention to the palace in Biała Olecka, the manor house in Lenarty and several other former noble residences. For archeology lovers, an interesting option will be a trip to the barrow cemetery in Czerwony Dwór. Evangelical churches are an important element of the cultural heritage of Masuria, because the majority of the population living in these areas were Protestants. The oldest wooden church in Masuria is located in Wieliczka.

When visiting Ełk, Gołdap and Olecko, it is worth taking advantage of audiowalks, which can be downloaded together with maps from the website egoturystyka.pl. English versions are also available. Numerous information published on this website will help you discover the beauty of Mazury Garbate on your own.
