Nicolaus Copernicus was a great astronomer, who “stopped the sun and moved the Earth.” Even though he lived five centuries ago, he continues to generate a lot of interest to this day. We still care for the legacy of his life and work. Copernicus’ connections with the region of Warmia and Masuria (he lived and worked in Warmia for nearly 40 years) are the motivation behind the creation of local research centers and tourist attractions.
The Copernicus Trail runs through the towns associated with the celebrated scientist’s life (its road and pedestrian versions differ significantly in terms of their course).
Copernicus is mainly associated with sky observations, although astronomy was not the only scientific field to which he devoted his attention. Nowadays, we can draw inspiration from his achievements so as to expand our knowledge of the cosmos. The places that will help us meet that end are planetariums and observatories.

There is an institution in Olsztyn called the Olsztyn Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory, which brings together both such facilities. In the planetarium, anyone interested can, quickly and regardless of the weather, gain knowledge about the starry sky and methods of space exploration. Stargazing aficionados may watch screenings in FullDome technology here.
Apart from direct observations of the sky, the observatory offers the opportunity to see the panorama of the city and learn about the history of astronomical instruments.
The Nicolaus Copernicus Museum is housed in the buildings of the Cathedral Hill in Frombork. The institution’s planetarium was set up in the basement of the Radziejowski Tower. Meanwhile, sky observations may be carried out in the Astronomical Park, located ca. 2 km from the town.
The observatory in Truszczyny welcomes anyone interested in sky observations and various events related to astronomy. Small observatories may also be found in: Kurzętnik, the Krasicki hotel in Lidzbark Warmiński and the school in Dywity.
There are many places in Warmia and Masuria where we can expand our knowledge of outer space. Thanks to this, all astronomy buffs can successfully develop their interests here.
