Summer in a leisurely style – visit the Cittaslow cities

If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of big cities, crowds of tourists in popular resorts and dream of spending your holidays in slow rhythm – without rush, noise and stress, make sure you visit one (or more) of the Cittaslow cities in Warmia and Masuria. There is a lot to choose from, because there are as many as 26 cities of good life in our region!

The Cittaslow International Network of Cities includes towns where quality is set above quantity, timeless values and cultural heritage are appreciated, and local traditions are cultivated. They are also characterised by a moderate population (up to 50,000 inhabitants) and a focus on activities for the benefit of the local community – in order to improve the quality of life of the locals and create optimal conditions for sharing their own values with tourists.

They are especially worth visiting in the summer, because during the holiday season there are numerous events that deserve attention. One of such events is the Cittaslow Bicycle Festival, which, in fact, is a series of events, because every “stop” of the festival that comprises a family bike rally and a number of games, competitions, animations and tastings of local delicacies – takes place in another city of the network.

Lovers of early music will appreciate Varmia Musica – a music festival held cyclically at the turn of July and August in Lidzbark Warmiński. It is a real treat for music lovers longing for the sounds of courtly music and wanting to get to know pieces composed for the commission of kings. You will listen to these heavenly sounds in the historical interiors of the castle of the Warmian Bishops – the impressions are incredible, you must hear it on your own… ears!

If you like books, and as children you eagerly read fairy tales and legends, you will be interested in the exhibition entitled “Demons, ghosts. Who lives in fairy tales of Warmia and Masuria”, which is available until the end of August in the city library in Morąg. Thanks to the exhibition, you will get to know fairytale characters, mythical creatures and terrifying monsters from Warmian and Masurian legends, such as the benevolent spirit called kłobuk or the spirit of water called topnik. Make sure you take your kids – since they won’t find such characters on TV, this may be a real surprise for them.

It is worth visiting the cities of good life not only when something special is happening, yet it may be even more gratifying when everyday peace prevails. This what their charm is all about – they show that it is worth slowing down and savoring every moment. Feel invited to the cities of Cittaslow in Warmia and Masuria, both in summer and at any other time of the year, but always in an unhurried mood.
