Time stopped here – Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek.

Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek is a magical place where time stopped. This place provides a unique opportunity to learn about traditional rural architecture and folk culture that have developed over the centuries in the areas of Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Little Lithuania.

Even though the ethnographic park was formally established in 1962, its idea dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. It was then that the Village Museum (Dorfmuseum Königsberg) was established in Königsberg, in the area of the Königsberg Zoo. They were gradually moved to Olsztynek between 1938 and 1942. Currently, the Museum of Folk Architecture includes: the Ethnographic Park and the Exhibition Hall and Mrongowisz House located in the city center.

Within the park, visitors can see approx. 80 objects of large and small architecture from four cultural regions: Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Little Lithuania, as well as individual objects from Sambia (currently Königsberg Oblast). There are residential, farm and industrial buildings here, and even religious buildings. In addition to wooden cottages and barns, the open-air museum also includes an inn, a water mill, windmills, a forge and a pottery kiln, a church with a bell tower and chapels. The buildings are furnished with exhibits related to traditional work methods and rituals in the countryside in the 19th and first half of the 20th century.

Well-kept gardens full of flowers and the presence of farm animals help you experience the life of an old village. In the farmsteads and pastures you can see not only goats, chickens and ducks, but also Skudde sheep, Suwałki geese and Polish draft horses.

Due to its character and size, the Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek frequently hosts cultural and social events. Every year it hosts the provincial harvest festival, accompanied by, among others, fair and a competition for the most beautiful harvest wreath. Also every year, traditionally on August 15, the Regional Herb Festival takes place here. The event refers to the folk tradition of blessing herbs, flowers and grains, and its purpose is to promote the use of herbs in everyday life.

A visit to the Ethnographic Park of the Museum of Folk Architecture in Olsztynek is an ideal proposition for all those who want to immerse themselves in history and tradition. The place delights with its beauty and atmosphere, allowing you to get to know the everyday life and culture of the old village.
